Saturday 21 March
St. James’ Church
11.30am - 12.30pm

Ree and Rick Treweek will present the making of The Lost Botanist

You are The Lost Botanist, misplaced in a world that’s forgotten all about nature, where even the stars and moon are permanently hidden by pollution, where imagination and dreams are starting to die, where the only plants left are potatoes and turnips.

While researching the lost marvels of the natural world, you open a grimoire that transports you to
The Under-Garden, the dream-like home of the spirits of all forgotten things.

In each of the wondrous places you’ll visit, you must find a mythical creature to guide you further into the unknown, from The Nethermere to The Amber Vale to The Nevermist…

The Lost Botanist is an interactive adventure for immersive devices, a five-minute journey to another dimension that will restore your childhood sense of wonder.

RICK TREWEEK | CO-DIRECTOR, EDEN LABS

Rick Treweek was born on a farm in Kokstad, with creativity in his genes and talented artists for a mother, grandmother, and sister, and a dad who drew cartoons.

After studying digital graphic design in Durban, he made websites and games for the likes of Eminen and Shaggy in the early 2000s. He’s spent his entrepreneurial career since then being two-steps ahead of the curve, creating mobile games, like World of Rabbit. Rick moved with Breakdesign to Singapore, where he was soon swept up in 3D printing and the maker movement. After trying out the Google Cardboard headset, Rick was soon 3D printing his own VR headsets. “3D printing is about taking stuff that is not real and making it real, while VR is about making things seem real that aren’t, so I got excited about combining them.”

This led to Alt Reality, a South African startup delivering VR and AR experiences to the likes of Jaguar, IBM, and Samsung, and now Eden Labs.

Rick speaks regularly on emerging technologies at conferences around the world, including VR Days in Amsterdam and Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference in Munich.

REE TREWEEK | CO-DIRECTOR, TULIPS & CHIMNEYS

Ree Treweek is a world builder – a sculptor, painter, illustrator, animator and director.

She has been seeking out spaces that find their resonance somewhere in between what is considered the Primary, and perhaps what may be, a Secondary world. It’s from these worlds, and the space where the two intersect, that Ree mines visual cues, stories and aesthetics to create her distinctive visual language.

As a co-founder of The Blackheart Gang, Shy the Sun and Tulips & Chimneys, Ree has become Africa’s most awarded animation director, having her work with the likes of Electronic Arts, Hendrick’s Gin, Riot Games, and United Airlines awarded at the Clios, Communications Arts Awards, D&AD, The Loeries, The London International Awards, Mobius Awards, New York Festivals and The South African Film and Television Awards, among others.
